The argument’s been going on for a while. 15 year old Alex hears most of it through his cracked bedroom door, even with the volume cranked up on his computer and his headset blaring with excited chatter. He slouches back in his chair, crossing his pale arms loosely. Really? Today of all days? The one day of the week without any homework? Was the universe trying to ruin his one fun day? A lock of his dyed-red bangs slips into his face — the universe’s answer. He blows them aside with a quick breath and keeps playing, trying to keep himself from getting sucked in.
“…I tried, Mom!” his little sister’s voice cracks from downstairs.
“I know you tried,” their mom replies, calm but agitated, the way she gets when she’s tired of arguing about something. “But trying isn’t enough if you’re not passing, and I’m being called in twice a month for parent-teacher conferences. Can you at least tell me what’s wrong?”
Alex taps at the analog stick, mowing down zombies before they can crawl through the window. His scrawny but toned arms are sore from karate class that afternoon — he'd been paired with someone twice his size for sparring — and between that and school, all he wants is to unwind, play Zombie Defense 3, and maybe chat with a few friends.
“She teaches it okay mom,” his sister snaps back, voice cracking with frustration. “but in the textbook, it’s just… it’s just pictures. Like, flat, boring pictures! How am I supposed to get it from that?!”
Alex frowns, looking away from the game. He gets that. Diagrams never worked for him either — he learns by doing.
"Damnit!" he groans as his character gets swarmed by a massive zombie horde. He’s doing the one thing he told himself he wouldn’t do — getting sucked into the conversation. He selects ‘Try Again’ with a frown, apologizing to the friends raging in his ears, and slumps deeper into his chair with a sigh. Sisters.
The yelling slowly fades into a quiet conversation. Sweet, sweet relief.
"... and they all have younger brothers! Of course they're doing better!" his sister whines from across the house, her voice cracking in aggravation once more.
"And their parents are fine with that?" their mother chimes in, her sharp, shocked tone catching Alex’s attention again. "What about their brothers? They don’t have a problem with anything?"
"It’s different when they’re younger!" his sister snaps. "They don’t even care about that stuff yet! Alex is too grumpy and old, so I don't have anything!"
Alex cocks his head and furrows his brows. What was she on about now? He's worked very hard over the past few semesters to figure out the minimum amount of homework he has to do to pass, letting him ignore the occasional assignment. If Maggie thinks that he's going to do her homework as well, she's out of her-
"Well, alright. I'll talk to Alex and have him help you with your anatomy class; but only if you promise me that your grades will go up once-"
"They will mommy they will!" Maggie interrupts, followed by a short pause as the conversation becomes hushes murmurs. Alex's mouth hangs open ever so slightly, as his brain wracks itself to figure out why his mother would want him to help Maggie with her homework. He barely passed anatomy himself!
Before he can even think it through, their mom calls up the stairs, cutting through his confusion.
"Alex!" she shouts, her voice carrying through the house. "Can you come here, I need to talk to you."
Alex winces, pausing the game and feeling the disappointment creep in. He hates when his parents pull him out of his downtime, especially today of all days. He’s in the middle of a gaming session with friends, but it’s clear he’s not getting out of this one. His mind scrambles for a reason to delay, but nothing comes to him.
“Yeah, yeah,” he mutters under his breath, rolling his eyes as he stands up from his chair. His pale legs feel stiff from sitting too long anyways. “Gimme a sec, guys, you can start another round without me. I dunno when I can be back.” he says into his mic, already starting to feel the frustration building.
He stretches and rubs his eyes before muttering one last, “Sisters…” under his breath, then heads downstairs, his mind still working to piece together why his mom would ask him to help with Maggie’s class.

Re: Sister's Anatomy Lesson
I'm sure sis will end up with her grade going up...after her brother shows how other things go up.
