Almost humiliated in front of friends and family

This was over thirty years ago. It was one busy day in October. I was invited to be part of some one's wedding party so that's where it started. We went out to breakfast that morning and started drinking Champaine. Then there was the wedding. I started drinking right away at the reception. So, by the time my wife and I got back home I was drunk and tired. What I didn't know was my wife planned a thirtieth birthday party for me that night after the wedding. All of our family and friends were right in the next room as we got undressed. They were waiting for me to walk in. I just wanted to get out of my clothes and stretch out on the couch, so I stripped down to my string bikini underwear and walked out of the bedroom. Just as I got out the door my wife said, I wouldn't do that. I took another step before I stopped and asked her why. She called me back into the bedroom and told me to put some clothes on. She didn't want to give up the surprise but then again, she didn't want to humiliate me either. My wife broke down and told me there was a room full of people waiting for me. After I dressed, I walked into the living room and everyone yelled surprise. I came soooo close to walking into that living room. Nothing on but red and black stripped string bikini underwear and socks.

They would have been far more surprised if your wife told you that you were overdressed in the underwear and had you take them off and than let you go into the living room. That would also have made a far better story to write here.

I have so many stories of me getting caught walking around in my underwear. That would have been the Best/worst story of all. (BTW) all these years later I kind of wish she had let me walk in. Maybe I could have yelled surprise first LOL

Your wife intentionally NOT telling you about the hidden guests would have made for a funny short story.
Your reaction would be to get dressed immediately. The wife won't let you get dressed and you have to spend the entire evening in that
skimpy thong like underwear.

Not sure if "Almost embarrassed" true stories actually count for much here.

When I see a pantsing in a movie that ends up with showing boxers...I think "Meh, so what".
