Chapter 11 - High School League - The Beginning

It was again time for hockey season to begin. The coach had gotten a raise and prestige in the student athletics community for how he turned around the Huntington Huskies pee wee and junior leagues. However, there was some doubt about his ability to make a deny in the high school league because his players were all freshman. All the other teams had a mix of freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Of course those other teams weren't starting from a defunct high school hockey program. The high school league had many more teams in it from all across the state, and nobody expected the Huntington Huskies to even make it to the District Championship let alone go on to the State Championship. The Huntington Huskies were starting behind the eight ball for sure, and they knew it.

Still, on that first day of practice spirits were high. Not everyone had seen everyone else in the off season so there was a lot of catching up going on. Out on the ice the team looked really good. It was obvious they had been keeping in shape and doing what they could to practice without the benefit of ice. The coach was happy with where they were starting from. He also knew people loved and underdog story.

He'd be lying to himself if he said he wasn't excited about being in the locker room with his team after practice. He hadn't seen any of them in the off season and it was fun for him to see the changing bodies of the kids. She gave the coach a wink and he smiled back. He had accidentally learned a lot about his players' proclivities. He wished he'd had an environment like this when he was in high school.

This last chapter reminds me of the surprising scene in Starship Troopers, where all the soldiers shower together.

With the team playing others across the state, a longer road trip might be needed. Ten hyped up and horny 15 year olds in a hotel could

Chapter 11 was one of character development and I anticipate more plot progression in Chapter 12--Chapter 11 is necessary. Airing dirty laundry within the confines of the locker room where teammates mutually trusted each other totally.

But from what I remember your skills and fitness increase a lot in these years, and even facing people 1 year older than me meant I was getting 10x'ed in the scoreline, so hearing a team beat opponents who are 3 years older than them 3 times in a row took me out of the story for a bit there.
