Baring the False Witness

My name is Sarah Sharpe...and my only crime is being female. In this place, in this school, that crime carries harsh punishments when the headmaster is involved.

Deacon Stoughton is the fearsome headmaster of Calvary Baptist High School for Boys, an Evangelical establishment that teaches most of the more affluent young men in our small town. He is stoic and cold, deep voiced, devoid of joy but full of judgement. Some compare him to Claude Frollo or Snape. Last year, the school was successfully sued for gender discrimination, paving the way for me to be its first (and thus-far only) girl student. I thought this would give me a leg up heading into college, but Mr Stoughton often made it clear how displeased he was about a girl "defiling" these sacred grounds and their long history.

Today the entire 65 student roster was gathered in the courtyard for his shocking announcement.

"Gentlemen, we have gathered here now because of a heinous action." Stoughton proclaimed. "This was a crime against both this establishment and even the Lord Himself. Our fundraiser cash, totaling over $10,000, was stolen yesterday evening. The culprit is standing here among us, touched of Mammon's Greed yet devoid of remorse. Miss Sharpe, will you confess your crime before your peers and the Lord, or will you dabble again in the deceit of Belial the Serpent?"

I gasped "Me? I didn't steal anything! I swear it"

He rolled his eyes "Path of the Serpent, what a surprise. You should know that despite your carefulness, our security camera caught glimpses of long hair and skirted uniform. As the sole owner of both, your guilt was beyond doubt. Now where have you stashed our funds?"

I shook my head pitifully "That's impossible! Please sir, I would never steal. Never. It had to be somebody else"

Stoughton pointed "There! You attempt the wiles of Eve, your accursed ancestor. She who trusted the Serpent over the Lord and then used her feminine wiles to corrupt He of the Red Clay, her husband Adam. All of humanity pays the cost for her choice."

Trembling, I got on my knees to beg "Please sir. I swear my innocence."

Raising his voice, Stoughton replied "Absurd! ...However shall I compel you to confess and return what was taken? Hmmmm. To speak of Eve, she is known to have brought shame to humanity...both figuratively and literally. Shame even of our sacred bodies. While we men experience this shame for Adam's foolishness, it is woman who feels it tenfold for Eve's sin of tricking her husband. Since you feel no shame in your crime, perhaps the shame of the flesh will compel honesty out of you."

My eyes went wide "What?"

He smiled, a rare feat "Just this once, perhaps we shall 'bare' a false witness. I'm sure your classmates will appreciate your exhibition, though I demand all of you to keep sin from your thoughts as your eyes sample all of her forbidden treasures. Sarah, will you now confess?"

I looked around, terrified. Deacon Stoughton did not bluff or make idle threats. The 64 boys were all staring at me in stunned silence, sinful thoughts written in all of their eyes. I can't believe this is happening. I never go uncovered, and even my bathing suit is a conservative tankini. Taking my clothes off in front of them would be my worst nightmare. If I was guilty I would confess in a heartbeat. But...I'm innocent. I don't have $10,000 and can't give it to him. Trying to lie would only make things worse, even if "worse" seems impossible.

Shaking uncontrollably, I whimpered "No! I didn't steal anything! Sir, don't make me take any clothes off in front of the boys. That is improper! I am modest and shy, I could never been seen like that before marriage. Please, I'm begging you...show mercy"

His face dropped "Impossible. Even that didn't elicit the truth? Or do you imagine me a liar? Remove your shoes and I shall ask again for the truth. Every time you lie, another clothing item shall be forfeit, until you stand before us bare as Eve herself."

I was ready to cry even before taking anything off. I've never been more scared in my life. I prayed for mercy or a savior, anything to preserve my modesty. The boys practically drooled with anticipation. I was about to be naked in front of all of them. And what horrible punishments would he order when I ran out of clothes?

We never learned until many days later that the true thief was a boy student wearing a wig and a stolen spare girls uniform to pin the blame on me. By the time we found out, it was far too late to save me.

Ironically we were talking in the other thread about you wanting to work on tension, and now you got my prompt which was tailor-made for nervous tension under the dominant merciless will of Deacon Stoughton. You'll probably have fun with it. Judging from your other works you should be great at this prompt, so I look forward to reading it.

Meanwhile your prompt for me is a large departure from my normal style for the setup of the stripping (I almost never use someone ordered to strip themselves without force). I'm taking some time to see where I want to go with that. I'm also going to make it a point to mirror the writing style as best as I can as well just to blend the parts better, mostly because it would drive me crazy if I didn't (the clash would be maddening to me, even if nobody else cared).

You handed me a story that is set up like a prototypical ENF classic, I set you up with a 90’s teen movie with a strong hint at ENF. Such a contrast. I better brush up on my John Calvin if I’m going to match your biblical hellfire and brimstone references. 😀

It will be fun learning to match someone else’s tone and writing style.

I was then escorted to the platform by the Prefect and his two goons, Billy Carlisle and Joshua Dolan to stand barefoot before Deacon Stoughton. A box was set in front of me and my shoes were placed inside.

“I ask you again.” Sneered Deacon Stoughton. “Will you confess your crime or will you bare your shame in front of God and your fellow students?”

Tears streamed down my face, but I couldn’t think of any way except forward. “I didn’t steal anything, I swear it!”

“Another lie!” Deacon Stoughton declared.

“Sir, please.” I begged.

“Do you have something to say?” he asked.

Nodding slowly, I said, “I’m not lying, but even if I were, by your own word, wouldn’t that have been the same lie? Not another one.”

Deacon Stoughton croaked what I assumed was an amused sound, “Clever girl. Very well, we shall go about this a more direct way. You have not sinned against me, nor the school, but against God Himself. And it is by His word that you shall be judged.”

A murmur ran through the crowd as if the other students were suddenly preparing for something.

“Students! What is the tenth commandment?” Demanded Deacon Stoughton.

“Thou Shall Not Covet.” The student body recited.

“Your covetous ways have led you to sin against God. You are a disgrace to this school and unworthy of your uniform. Remove your skirt, girl!” Deacon Stoughton demanded.

I froze. This was it, I had no other counter to this. He had passed judgement and I was now sentenced.

“Prefect!” Deacon Stoughton said, when I didn’t move. The two goons lifted me into the air and the Prefect yanked my skirt down, pulling it off and tossing it into the box with my shoes.

“Noooooo Please don’t do this!” I screamed, as the set me down.

“Students, what is the seventh commandment?” Deacon Stoughton continued.

“Thou Shall Not Steal!” The students recited.

“You, girl, not satisfied with merely wanting the money, you took the next step to take it for yourself. You have disgraced this school and are unworthy of your uniform. Remove your blouse.” He sneered.

“I cannot!” I cried. “It isn’t pr-pr-proper.”

“Prefect!” Deacon Stoughton repeated.

The Prefect stood behind me and grabbed my shirt. “Unless you want to have to sew all these buttons back on, I suggest you cooperate.” He whispered.

I understood. Shaking, I slowly began unbuttoning my blouse. When I was finished, the Prefect pulled it down off of my shoulders and removed it. I was now standing in front of the student body wearing only my bra and panties. Tears streamed down my face and I could no longer speak.

“Do you confess and repent, girl? Or shall I continue?” the Deacon asked.

I couldn’t respond, so he then asked. “Where did you get those undergarments?”

“Ma-ma-mom and dad.” I stammered.

“Students! What is the fifth commandment?” Deacon Stoughton demanded.

“Honor your mother and father.” They recited.

“You have disgraced your mother, whose bosom once gave you nourishment and life. You are unworthy to cover your own bosom with her gift.” He said.

Slowly, inevitably, I reached back and unclasped my bra, covering my breasts with my hands as soon as it slid off into the box.

“You have also disgraced your father’s name with your lies and thievery. You are unworthy of the life and garments that he has toiled for. Removed your panties!”

“Nooooo, I won’t!” I managed.

When the goons lifted me by my arms, the Prefect tried yanking my panties down, but I kicked and screamed as hard as I could. Eventually, they got them off of me and when I was set back down naked in front of all my classmates, I could only stand there and cry.

I placed my hands over my breasts and pubic area. I did my best to keep covered, but Deacon Stoughton sneered, “Foul wench, you will not cover yourself as Eve once did. No, you shall stand with your full shame on display until you confess your sins and repent!” He then instructed the Prefect to hold my arms out and allow my shame to be witnessed by all.

As the Prefect approached, I tried kicking him away. Eventually his two goons were able to get hold of my arms and pull them away. I was able to bit one of them hard, but it didn’t matter. I was now exposed. I screamed as loud as I could for as long as I could.

Finally, Deacon Stoughton announced, “She refuses the mercy of confession and repentance. She then shall be placed into the chamber of no secrets until she is ready to reveal her secrets. Take her!”

With that, I was dragged away. They took me into the boy’s dorms. It looked to be an exact duplicate of the dorm that was assigned to me. Upon entering, you enter a great hall. It had vaulted ceilings and long narrow tables lined the room into four rows allowing for up to 80 people to be seated at once.

There was one difference could see between the girl’s dorm and the boy’s dorm. In the center of the room was a large glass box. It was four feet by four feet with a hinge on one of the walls and a latch opposite the hinge, allowing the wall to become a door when the latch was unlocked.

I was dragged into the center of the room and saw that the box sat on what I hope was a water stain on a tiled floor with a drain in the center. As I was placed in the box, I realized that instead of glass, it was actually a clear plastic about an inch thick. I also noticed a three inch wide slit that was about eighteen inches tall on another wall. They closed the door with me inside and locked it.

“You’ll be allowed to attend classes dressed in your shame as you are. You will also be given one hour for study in the evening. Other than that you will be confined here until you confess and repent.” The Prefect told me coolly. Pointing to a small bell that I had not noticed before that was sitting on the floor in the corner of the chamber, he continued, “When you are ready to repent, ring that bell and we will send for Deacon Stoughton.”

I responded by sitting on the stained floor with my knees raised to my chest and cried. For the next hour or so I couldn’t do anything but sit there and cry. Boys watched me for a while, but when they realized that I wasn’t showing anything anymore, they sort of lost interest.

Dinner was announced, but I wasn’t allowed to eat. Two boys stayed and waited with me. I knew one of them was named Josiah. I didn’t know the other boy’s name. After a while I ran out of tears, Josiah finally spoke. “Do you need anything? Are you hungry?”

I couldn’t really speak, so I nodded. I was starving actually. They left and a little while later when they returned they had bread and cheese from the kitchen. They also gave me a bottle of water. “Will you get in trouble for feeding me?” I asked.

“No. This is the rule. You can eat lunch with us during the day, but while you are in the box you live as a beggar. We can share our food with you if we want.” Josiah responded.

“I’m Sarah.” I told him since we had never been formally introduced.

“I’m Josiah and this is Connie.” Josiah told me.

“Connie?” I asked.

“It’s short for Conrad.” Connie said.

I really was hungry, and they brought me food. For that I was grateful. I stood up and didn’t try to cover myself as I retrieved the food from the slot. Their eyes bugged out of their heads. In fact, though I had been naked in front of the school, the only ones to see me up-close were Deacon Stoughton, the Prefect and his two goons.

I felt ashamed of what I was doing, but if this got these two to help me, I would stand her all night. I quickly gobbled down the bread and cheese and drank the water. I let them watch me and only covered up when another boy had come down to see what I was doing.

“Is there anything else you need?” Connie asked, excited at the prospect of earning another viewing.

I nodded. “After they took my clothes.” I told them. “I think that they are hiding them somewhere in this dorm.”

“I don’t think so.” Said Josiah. “Deacon would probably have them in his office.”

I shook my head. “No, I am certain they are somewhere in this building. If you guys find them, I’ll give you another reward.”

“If we bring you your clothes, they’ll just take ‘em away from you again.” Connie protested.

“I know. I don’t want you to bring them to me, I just need to know they are safe. Find them and let me know where they are. That is all I ask.” I said. They left after that to get ready for bed.

I slept on the floor. There was no guard, and nobody came around the chamber overnight. When I woke in the morning, I had no choice but to pee in the drain, since they weren’t going to let me out until class started.

For the next several days, classes were all the same. I was being punished, so I had to stand at the blackboard and write down everything the teacher said. This left me with only one hand to cover myself, though facing the blackboard as I was I wasn’t that exposed. When we ate lunch, I normally would eat alone, since the boys tended to avoid me. Now, however, everyone wanted to watch me eat. I did my best to keep myself covered, but with only one guaranteed meal each day, I needed to eat as much as I could.

In the evenings, Josiah and Connie would come and bring me food. Sometimes I would let them look at me, and sometimes not. They didn’t complain either way, so I felt better about our friendship as it progressed.
Each day brought a new humiliation. Teachers made me pass out papers to the class and insisted that I use both hands to hold the papers and not cover myself. During a lecture on Sex Education, Mrs. Franklin insisted that I be the female model for the class. She made me sit on one of the desks and spread my legs while she explained the innermost part of the female anatomy.

I spent so much time helping the teacher that I couldn’t take my own notes. Fortunately, Josiah and Connie helped me study each evening for the hour I was allotted.

On the fifth day, Josiah and Connie came to see me before breakfast. “We found them!” Connie exclaimed.

“Found what?” I asked.

“Your uniform!” Josiah said. “We saw it in one of the older boy’s lockers.”

I had them describe for me exactly which locker it was in. I was thankful that this building is identical to the girl’s dorm, so when they described the layout of the room I was able to picture it from memory. “Locker 1152” Connie said.

I nodded. Then I stood up and moved to where the slot was at. “I’ll give you your reward now.”

The two boys looked eager. “What is it?” Josiah asked.

As I leaned toward the slot I said, “You can touch me wherever you want.”

Josiah hesitated. “I don’t think I should. I just did this because we are friends.”

Connie on the other hand pressed his hand into the slot and began massaging my left breast. In the time I had spent being naked, I mostly felt humiliated and scared. But with these two, I was grateful and more at ease. When Connie touched my breast, there was an exhilaration that I had never felt before. I felt excited and my heart began to pound in my chest.

After a minute or so, Josiah reached his hand in and felt my pussy. “Is it always this wet?” He asked. I couldn’t speak. The excitement had me out of breath. Instead, I just shook my head while they continued to molest me for a few more minutes. I wanted to scream, but knew that would bring unwanted attention. After several minutes I ended it by stepping back. The boys didn’t complain, though they looked disappointed.

When then headed up for breakfast, I rang the bell. DING! DING! DING!

In a few minutes, the Prefect was standing in front of the chamber. “You have decided to confess?” He asked.

I nodded.

“Someone send for Deacon Stoughton.” He said. It didn’t take him long to arrive.

“So, our Jezebel has decided to confess and repent!” announced the Deacon. “Is this true?”

“I will show you where everything is.” I told him.

“Very well, Prefect, release her that she may come clean and bare her soul.” The Deacon ordered.

After the Prefect opened the door, I was allowed to walk out. Nobody stopped me from covering myself, so I did. “Follow me.” I said softly.

I led them up two flights of stairs, following the description that Connie and Josiah had given me.

“What, does she think we’re stupid?” Asked Billy Carlisle. “Why would she hide the money in the boy’s dorm?”

I kept walking until we reached locker 1152. “It’s in there.” I told them.

“In there?” The Deacon asked skeptically. I nodded.

“Whose locker is this?” Asked the prefect.

One of the other boys answered, “It’s Billy Carlisle’s.”

“William, open your locker.” Ordered Deacon Stoughton.

“She’s joking!” He protested. “Why would the money be in my locker?”

The Prefect put his arm on Billy’s shoulder. “Open it. Now.”

Billy started crying before he even managed to open it. Inside were a girl’s uniform, a wig and a paper bag that contained the $10,000.

“Carlisle, what is the meaning of this?” Deacon Stoughton demanded.

“It’s her fault! She shouldn’t be here! Don’t you see? I did it to get rid of HER!” he yelled and lunged at me. The Prefect caught him and within seconds Billy was subdued.

“Miss Sharpe. You may report to my office to retrieve your uniform. Mr. Carlisle will serve out the remainder of your punishment and when he is through, he will make a special amends to you for the humiliation you have endured. Students, you are dismissed.”

With that, I was allowed to complete my school at Calvary Baptist High School. From that day on, it was no longer a crime to be a girl at this prestigious school.

Dude, I'm not Christian and obviously never went to any Christian schools, but somehow Sarah talking back and disrespecting authority in that exact moment and exact situation still triggered my ruler-sense lol. My imagination caused me to envision that scene from Blues Brothers with the army of nuns approaching, each armed with a foot-long wooden whacker ready to strike. She's lucky she's not dead, cause of death: misreading the room.

This was a fun and interesting conclusion to my opener. I'm very amused by how tremendously differently this went from how I expected it to go. At no point did I expect so much (or any) of the plot to occur after day one. Sarah's escape plan was quite clever as well, which I enjoyed. I had it in my mind that it would serve as a Crucible allegory, but in actuality it turned into much more of a Scarlet Letter metaphor (with her ostracized, othered, and turned into a pariah over time until she finally confesses her sin). Quite interesting.

Also I found it tremendously ironic that the experience inadvertently taught Sarah the value of commodifying her body in order to acquire goods and services. Oops.

I have one slight correction that I have to make, though: As a Baptist institution, this school would have "Thou Shalt Not Steal" as the 8th Commandment, not the 7th. The Catholics use that as the 7th, but Evangelical Baptists split Graven Images into its own thing and combine both Covetous Commandments into one. And yes, the different sects all number and split the Commandments differently. You would think that this list (the only known words on Earth penned directly by God himself) would be the one and only thing that all Abrahamic faiths agreed on, but it's practically the opposite. Don't feel bad, though. I legitimately only know this because of George Carlin.

Full disclosure: Deacon Stoughton was me nemesis on this story. Since you penned me in by solving the mystery of who stole the money in your intro, my early drafts all revolved around torturing Sarah for the entire story. I could just never write Deacon Stoughton cartoonish enough to make him seem like the same character as the introduction. The best I could do was kick him in the nuts metaphorically so it didn’t seem as odd when his demeanor changed. And then get him off the stage as quickly as possible.

Besides, my strength in my writing is finishing the story in as compelling way as possible. It was a bit of a rush to get it done in 2500 words, so a lot was left on the cutting room floor, but at least we got a satisfactory ending.

You did way better finishing my story, no doubt. But it was a pretty fun journey.

I tried to make him easier to envision and write by comparing him to Snape and Claude Frollo (as well as his namesake), but I guess that didn't help enough. Honestly I live in the Bible Belt so there are preachers like that all over the place. Part of this prompt was inspired by the ridiculous over-the-top Christian response to the Boy Scouts letting in girls and how girls are expected to be shamed for life because of the Curse of Eve (which was even blamed for periods until modern science).

I still remember when Stephen Hawking died and all of the radio preachers were celebrating, saying that he had been "possessed by a demon sent to oppose Saint Billy Graham's holy mission which mangled his body, and that if Stephen had accepted Jesus into his heart for even one single second it would have driven out the demon and he would have walked out of the chair cured." The delusional insanity and fanaticism of Evangelicals has always inspired my writing when it comes to writing supervillains and the like.

You did an excellent job on him. He reminded me of that creepy pastor character in Poltergeist 2. I’m just not a good enough writer to match your creation well enough.

It was mixing the biblical rhetoric with innuendo that kept tripping me up. I could never get it just right.

The funny part is that I could do that sort of thing all day. I love Christian mythology, especially dealing with the Heavenly Host and the Hierarchy of Hell.

Without doubt I would have had Stoughton bring up the fable of the Repentant Thief crucified next to Jesus, and probably had him mock Sarah's reactions to her nudity by snidely reminding her that Job lost everything he held dear, unjustly at that, yet not once did a tear or foul thought escape from his face. There are so many popular tales that are so easy to weaponize against anyone a person sees as beneath them.
