Chapter 1: Off the Record

***********************************************************************************************************************************

Little Suzie Godwin had spent the entire summer preparing for this moment. She’d rewatched every interview on the school website, read every article, taken notes on every little detail, and even practiced in front of her bedroom mirror with a hairbrush as a microphone. She knew she could do this.

No—she was going to do this. She’s dreamt of being a reporter for as long as she could remember, and a gig like this while she was only in middle school would be the perfect way of starting her adult career.

But now, sitting in the newspaper office with Mr. Alder and Coach Reynolds staring her down, she was starting to feel like she’d walked into an interrogation.

“I’m sorry, Suzie,” Mr. Alder said, shaking his head. “But you can’t go into the boys’ locker room for interviews. Which means that we’re going to have to find a different candidate.”

Suzie blinked. “But… Michael did.” Michael Steffans was the closest thing to a celebrity Pinebrook Middle School had ever produced. ‘The Kid with the Golden Voice.’ He went on to be a viral success online when thousands heard his great interview voice-and by the time he’d went to high school, he’d been promised jobs once he graduated by major sports companies!

Coach Reynolds snorted. “Michael was a boy, Suzie. It’s different.”

Suzie frowned, gripping the edge of her chair. “How?”

Mr. Alder sighed, like he was dealing with a toddler who just wouldn’t let something go. “Because BOYS can be in the boys’ locker room. And GIRLS can’t. That’s just how it is. It’s in the names.”

Suzie felt her stomach twist. That didn’t explain anything. “But I won’t be going in as a girl to use them! Mrs. Greene the janitor cleans the boys’ bathroom but she’s a girl!!” she said, trying to stay calm. “I’ll be doing a job, like Mrs. Greene. Interviewing players when they’re JUST done with the game is what made Michael’s interviews so good! He talked to them while everything was fresh!”

Coach Reynolds shook his head. “It’s not about that. What we’re worried about is WHY a young girl would want to be in there. It’s disrespectful to the boys. Do you see where we’re going with this?”

Suzie blinked. “Uh… because I want to do my job?”

Coach Reynolds gave her a weird look. “Look, I’ve been around middle school girls long enough to know how these things go. Boys are changing a lot at this age, and a girl in their locker room is just going to upset them. And I don’t need you affecting their performance.”

Mr. Alder nodded, like they were in some secret grown-up boys club Suzie wasn’t invited to. “Suzie, I think you’re ambitious, and that’s great. I would love to have you in any position OTHER than the school’s sports reporter. But let’s be real. You’re a girl trying to get into a boys’ locker room. That’s not going to happen.”

Suzie sat there, stunned.

They weren’t saying no because of a rule. They were saying no because they thought that as a girl, she had some weird, creepy ulterior motive.

Heat rushed to her face, but not from embarrassment—she was furious.

She had been raised by two loving parents who had taught her from day one that she could do anything a boy could. They’d told her stories about women who had fought for their rights, who had changed the world. Suzie had always listened, nodding along, but deep down, she’d never really felt it. Sexism had always been something that happened to other people, in other places.

Until now.

She sucked in a breath, forcing herself to stay calm. “Okay, so… you’re worried girls might have ‘ulterior motives.’” She made air quotes with her fingers. “What if Michael Steffans was gay? What if he had ulterior motives? Did you never think about that just because he was a boy?”

Coach Reynolds frowned. “Michael wasn’t gay. Besides, that’s different.”

“How?” Suzie shot back. “Because if you were worried about people acting weird in the locker rooms, we would have private showers and changing stalls. But we don’t!” She leaned forward, pressing her hands on the desk. “So I guess no one really cares about if someone’s looking where they shouldn’t. You just care that I’m a girl.”

Mr. Alder looked uncomfortable, like she was saying things he genuinely hadn’t thought about before but really didn’t want to think about now. As a professional newsman himself, he could smell a potential legal issue from miles away. Coach Reynolds, on the other hand, just rolled his eyes.

“This isn’t a debate, Suzie,” he said. “It’s a rule.”

Suzie narrowed her eyes. “Then maybe the rule needs to change.”

Neither of them answered, but she could tell they weren’t taking her seriously.

Fine. They weren’t going to help her?

Her mother was a lawyer. She’d just have to change it herself.

*To be continued…*

I love all your stories and this one is setting up to be a great one indeed. It's convenient that Suzie's mother just happens to be a lawyer and that bodes well for her plan to interview the boys in the locker room. I look forward to Sister's Anatomy Lesson as well as you left it in a very embarrassing and exciting situation!

Excellent setup chapter.
I look forward to finding out the legal reasonings behind letting girls into the male locker room.

What year do you imagine this taking place. In current day, or in the past?

Personally - I’m calling this a SciFi, sliiiiightly in the future. But in an alternate dimension where the politics of feminism were a bit stronger.

The world is imperceptibly different day-to-day, with a few key differences. Like how this might pan out legally ;)

Great start to the story. Suzie's mother sues and then perhaps Michael Steffans returns to support her.

Brilliantly written of course, you're really fantastic at these stories. Everything feels very natural. You're really on a roll!

Now of course I understand one of the reasons this story won the vote was because it will probably lead to little Suzie getting to see a lot of naked boys in the changing rooms and in the showers. I tend to prefer it when it's just one naked boy trapped with a load of girls and women because I feel like that's more embarrassing for the boy , maybe she could do the odd one on one interview with a solo naked boy?

I understand this will likely be lots of naked boys and that's fine too. I've no doubt it will be a great story and tons of fun to read :D

Chapter 2: Getting The Press Pass

***********************************************************************************************************************************

Principal Martin sat back in his seat, frowning. Suzie Godwin had come into his office with a very serious claim. He didn’t blame Mr. Alder or Coach Reynolds for not wanting a young girl hanging around in the boys locker room—that could easily turn bad. But the more Suzie had talked, the more he was forced to confront the fact that her case wasn't entirely unfounded. But whether it was because she was making a compelling argument, or because their policies clearly needed better wording, he wasn't entirely sure.

Still, that didn't mean the rule was going to change. He could see himself where this was going, and he was not about to let it happen. Even if Coach Reynolds had phrased it in a way that made things worse.

"Miss Godwin, I understand your frustration. And you're absolutely right: the rule is unfair. However, the boys would find it unfair if I made an exception, that allowed a girl to go into their locker room!” He gestured widely, hoping his point was sinking in. "Sometimes, a rule needs to be UNfair, to create a situation that IS fair. Does that make sense?"

She crossed her arms. “But why is what I want to do not important just because it might embarrass them? That’s not fair! Rules should be about fairness, not saving boys from getting all weird and shy! Boys get embarrassed by, like, everything. One boy in my art class wouldn’t even touch the pink paint! He said it was gay! But colors can't BE gay.”

He rubbed his temples. "I have a young son Suzie, I understand what you mean. But it's not just a matter of fairness to you, or any one boy. We have an established system, and we can't break or change it just because one student feels left out. What kind of message would that send?"

Her frown deepened. "That it was more important to let a girl be a reporter than letting boys be sexist.”

He flinched. He didn’t like being called out, especially not by an eleven-year-old, even if she was quite clever for her age. Yet his face softened, as he considered his approach. “And what if a boy asked to be a sports reporter, hmm? Should I allow them to go into their girls’ locker room too?

“That’s different! Boys act… weird around girls,” Suzie said, digging through her backpack until she pulled out a stack of news articles that she'd printed from home. “My mom explained it to me—like, there’ve been tons of guy reporters who used their jobs to be creepy to women. But women doing that? Doesn’t happen!” she added, repeating the line just like her mom taught her, smiling like she'd nailed it. Suzie had known she couldn’t just throw herself into a debate with the Principal without having a few choice arguments ready. She didn't plan on getting the job this way, but if it worked...

Suzie was ready to continue, but Principal Martin held up a hand. "I get it. You've done your research," He took the papers from her, quickly parsing through them. "And honestly, I'm impressed. But what about YOUR safety? I agree, young men can act horribly towards women, and I would never allow a boy in the girls' locker room. I could be convinced to do the opposite, but what you’re asking me is to send you into a small room, with no windows, and dozens of boys. Alone. How can I guarantee your safety?”

Suzie's mouth opened, but no sound came out. For once, she was stumped. She hadn't expected that argument when she was planning this conversation with her mother. Principal Martin smirks to himself, clearly understanding the doozie of an argument he'd just served her. Still, he continued faithfully flipping through the articles.

“So if the problem is that boys might act out... Why not send a teacher with me? Or the janitor. Or literally any grown-up. They can make sure everyone plays nice while I do my job. That's how the school prevents boys from acting out everywhere else!"

Principal Martin rubbed his chin. "I guess that could work," he conceded. "But the question is, who would do it? Most of the staff have their hands full as it is. And, no offense Suzie, you haven't exactly made Mr. Alder or Coach Reynolds into your number one fans." He didn't want to admit it yet, but the more Suzie spoke, the more he was beginning to warm up to the idea. He'd always wanted his school to be progressive, and if a student had an interest in journalism, who was he to stand in their way? The boys had it too good here anyways, as far as he was considered. A little humble pie wouldn't kill them. Plus, he did agree with her, on some level. Bare minimum the rules were dated, and needed updating.

"What about Mrs. Carson!” She suggests with a smile. “She teaches sex-ed to the seniors, right? That way the boys can’t be upset that she’s seeing something she doesn’t already know about!”

"Well, I think you will find that nearly all of our teachers have seen someone naked before. I'm not running a monastery here." Principal Martin laughs heartily at the young girls naiveté, making Suzie blush slightly. She looks away shyly, realizing how silly she had sounded. Still, he was laughing now, which maybe was a good sign for her.

"Well, you're certainly determined, aren't you, Miss Godwin?" He chuckled, folding his hands on his desk. "And Mrs. Carson does teach sex ed, yes. The boys will be embarrassed no matter who it is. What I am interested in is whether or not your chaperone would be able to be calm in that environment. Mrs. Carson would be a great choice."

Principal Martin had the look of a man who'd reached a conclusion, but that had almost felt... too easy. "So... is this happening?" Suzie asks, her face screwed into a confused frown.

"I will make an exception, this once, and allow you to interview the boys in the locker room." Before he can continue, Suzie leaps out of her chair. "Yes!! Thank you Principal Martin! Thank you, thank you, thank you!"

The older man holds up a hand in silence, until the little girl sheepishly slumps back into her seat, muttering an apology.

" Now. You will take Mrs. Carson with you as a chaperone. But we’re going to establish some rules. They’re subject to change as we discover how to make this work, so don’t expect them to be set in stone." Suzie nods, and quickly fishes a pad and paper out of her backpack. She clicks the pen, and looks up at the principal expectantly. He smirks. She already has the look of a reporter.

"First, you cannot go into the shower area."

"But Principal Martin! Michael Steffins-"

"Hang on, I'm not finished. You cannot GO into the showers, but you may otherwise roam freely to interview who you like. The surfaces will be slippery for one thing, and the school simply doesn't have the budget to replace any water damaged equipment." Suzie frowns ever so slightly, but otherwise nods and continues her note taking. "Yes sir..."

"Second, I understand you may want images for your articles. NO funny business. I’m not expecting that kind of behavior from you, but just so it has been said. You obviously cannot print anything... unsavory in the papers."

Suzie's little pen stops moving as her eyes dart towards the ceiling, thinking deeply. "Couldn't ANY picture in a locker room be called that though?" Her big eyes land on the principals, and he sighs softly, chuckling to himself.

"Above the belt Suzie. Or at least make sure everything is covered. I trust you know what I'm talking about?" Suzie's cheeks flash red, and she dutifully nods."Yes sir...."

"The last rule is for your benefit. In the interest of respecting of you as a professional, the boys will be informed that they cannot cower."

"Cower, sir?"

"They have to go about locker activities as they normally would, and take interviews as they did for Mr. Steffins. If you pull someone aside for an interview, they will not be permitted to decline, or change their attire first. They must accept the interview as they are. I’ll run this by the coaches. I trust that this unacceptable to you?”

Suzie froze. Wait—did he actually say that? Did she really win?! She felt her whole brain trying not to explode from excitement. But no. Gotta be professional. Gotta play it cool. She sat up straighter and did her very best Serious Reporter Face.

“No, sir. Those all sound totally reasonable.”

She held out her hand, like she’d seen her mother do to so many clients.

Principal laughed openly, but extended his hand. This girl really was something. "Welcome aboard, Miss Godwin."

She skipped out of his office, barely able to contain herself. This was it. She'd done it.

She had her very own job. She'd literally broken the glass ceiling. She was following in the footsteps of her idol. She'd get to see her male classmates naked! (Although, she reminder herself, that wasn't the only reason)

And the best part was, she didn’t even have to pull out that letter from her mother threatening a lawsuit!

***********************************************************************************************************************************

Bonus:

Back in the office, Principal Martin sat with a cup of coffee, smiling at the little girl, so happy, and excited, and filled with energy. He could remember the days of being young, and so, so eager.

He shakes his head silently as she leaves the room, catching what looked like the beginning of the girl literally skipping out of his office.

"You did good today, Martin. You did good." He says to no one in particular, smiling.

Maybe this would help the school continue the success of Michael Steffins. With him as sports reporter, the paper had expanded beyond the walls of Pinebrook - being sold in gas stations, and hair salons across town. But ever since the boy had graduated, sales had stagnated. Maybe this little girl could turn it around.

Coach Reynolds wasn't going to be too happy. Frankly, that was an understatement. But it was the boys that would really be pissed. Not only was there a girl reporter, but a female chaperone. Between the rules an the possibility for photographs, the boys were going to lose their minds.

Let them be mad, he thinks. It would build character.

And even if it doesn't....

His hand reaches down to cup his rapidly growing erection.

There are plenty of other people that will enjoy it.

Glad to see she gets to do the interviews in the locker room. Principal Martin getting excited about the fact that the boys will be exposed to Suzie was a surprise!
