Is there anyway we could limit bringing old stories back to the front page?

Post by Nikolai »

The thanks system is great and really helps, but lately I find everytime I look at the front page multiple old stories are brought back to the front because someone felt the need to make a random comment on it. I'm sure the writers enjoy the praise but when its been inactive for months, it seems redundant and counter productive and its puts the actual new stories further down the list than they should be. Making a comment on something somewhat recent or even if it was on occasion but when its a few people doing it multiple days in a row and there's 8 old stories that have been inactive clogging the front page it seems a bit much. Just a thought idk if anyone else is finding it a little annoying but when it's something simple as "I love this story!" Or "I hope you do this this and this with her." And its an old ass story just let it rest man, if you truly want the story continued make a topic in general discussions or message the author. I'm not viredae but these are just my thoughts on it and I kinda find it a bit obnoxious.

Totally agree with you. I was reading a story, and couldn’t find it back because of the many stories that came through by stories from the past 😂

Could I suggest after a month without a comment, only the original poster can revive a story, I'm sure there is something in the set ups.

I've seen in other forums people posting thanks or short comments in other forums to get posting numbers up, Now I'll admit at this stage of my life, I am a grumpy old fart, but, that does annoy me.

Id like something like this, I'm not trying to attack anyway on the page but it was really annoying to post a new part for my story and find 5 old stories above it.

Thats what I'm saying! I don't know why they'd need to get posts up but I found it really annoying that I posted a new part to my story and there were 5 old stories above it when I woke up. Not to mention that in no offense to those commentators it just seemed totally unnecessary and even some of them kind of gross and cringe. Like "do this to her now out her in a diaper(not a kink shame but when it's stories from six months before its a little odd and lowkey creepy imo) or just the typical "I love this story!" Just seemed really inconsiderate, unnecessary, and annoying. Praise an author all you want on a recent story or if its older message the author or make a new thread talking about it, but the random comments on age old stories isn't it.

What I would really like is that the 'archived' stories that I can post from the old database be is a special section that does not allow replies and any discussion of them occurs in a different section. While discussion of an old story is good, in the current system, it brings the postings out or order.

I was thinking of posting about this myself but thought it might just be me that was mildly irritated by the situation (and also wasn't sure I had any particular right to complain about it), so I'm glad you brought it up.

While it's never been a major issue, it was always something that would happen from time to time on the previous iteration of this board and on other sites. Basically a new person will find the board, read back through the historical posts and post their response to it - sometimes something interesting but more often than not something along the lines of 'I enjoyed that'. They may not even be aware that their comments will bump the threads back to the top of the pile.

It's a difficult one because other sites have avoided the problem by locking threads into the order they're posted in, however this means that you have to either scroll down the page to see if a story has been updated or have chapters posted seperately (resulting in the story and comments being fragmented across the board). I don't think that's something we'd want to do here. If the restrictions outlined by dublinjohn are possible, that sounds like a good way to go.

Side note: it seems odd that so many new posters have joined at the same time and that their comments seem very similar in both style and content. Is it the same person posting with multiple accounts for some reason?

I don't mind an older story being reserected from time to time - especially if it's one I enjoyed but had forgotten about - but the number being res'ed at the moment is excessive and definitely obscurs currently active stories.

This is something that happens all of the time on this type of forum. I used to frequent (and mod) SOOOO many forums back in the early 2000s. Some new person will show up and randomly bump the bejesus out of 1-10 random ancient posts, sometimes YEARS old. I've heard that it's often caused by Google bringing up an old post for somebody's search, and that old post being what brings the new member to us. It's annoying for sure, and the only fix that would ever work would be for a mod to lock all threads after a month or so of inactivity (which is more work than its worth).

That being said, the best counter for us members is to just bump up the modern threads over the old ones. Real comments aren't even needed, back in the day people would just post "bump" and be done with it.

The REAL pain in the ass is when the spam bots hit, which is inevitable and will flood the first 3 pages of every subforum with ads for viagra, credit cards, home loans, and other pointless garbage. They used to hit the Dreambooks like locusts, and this type of forum has been a magnet for their kind. Lots of forums eventually require mod verification to make new accounts, but then that massively deters new members so I highly recommend against that.

I also thought that it could be multiple accounts! Its all just so similar and odd and it lowkey made me uncomfortable.

I do like the idea of bumping stories from time to time especially if its being blocked out by older threads. For example I found Raven's "ball pit" buried on the front page yesterday and hadn't saw that it had been posted. Its a fun story and I made sure to say something to bring it back forward. It makes sense this would happen from time to time just seems really strange and kinda like the same person at times even like going back and forth with themselves or something. If it wasn't the same person I'd be surprised at just how much this happened all of a sudden and all the same like style of comments.

One of the forums I modded had four people join all at once and chat amongst themselves in random threads all over. What "they" didn't know was that forums such as these save the IP addresses of its members for mods to see for security reasons, and all four were identical. When confronted about this "they" got mad and left. My only guess towards motive was a fear of being outnumbered or ignored, trying to fake being popular until real people followed.

I'm afraid I was one of those responsible. I read the back catalogue and wanted to make a positive comment.

Apologies for any problems, but I'm a little put out by the tone of some of the comments. Maybe a better response would be a polite request to the poster or a private message, I'm sure this would be more effective and less aggressive.
