Part Sixty-Three

Lexie and Aditty looked on benignly as the young estate girls took over, making me climb out of the trolley and leading me by the hand towards the play area. The girls' ages probably ranged from ten to twelve, the likely successors to Caz and co in a few years time. I spent the next twenty minutes being harried around the various pieces of equipment. A couple of them pushed me on the swing, though like all the other items in the play area, they were not designed for someone of my size. They pushed the roundabout so fast that I became dizzy, much to their amusement as I staggered about trying to regain my equilibrium once it had finally stopped. Their favourite however turned out to be the dome climbing frame, where they kept me for ten minutes or so, forcing me to assume various postures as I climbed, swung and hung there. Throughout this, I could occasionally glimpse people passing on the path at the bottom of the hill but presumably they were unable to see clearly what was going on and assumed it was just the estate girls being rowdy as usual.

I was extremely gratified when Lexie finally intervened, announcing that it had been fun but we really should be getting going. "Could you girls look after this trolley for us ?" Aditty asked them. The girls agreed, stating that Caz would know what to do with it. "I'd better get back to the shop and help out mum" Aditty continued to Lexie, who took my hand. We only had a couple of hundred yards to go now and soon made the relative sanctuary of the path that eventually led alongside Doris's house. We were finally standing in my back garden. My kitchen window was a dual pane design and I had left the small top pane open.
